Gartner Watch blog

Should Gartner be regulated? Joe's arguing that "they are “information monopoly” that dominates the influence industry on the buy-side of a multi-trillion dollar IT industry" and that they should follow the same SEC regulations than financial analysts. Interesting analysis, who's going to do it though Joe?

The logic of Joe's post isn't that Gartner should be regulated, but that vendors should be. He highlights "selective disclosure" to Gartner by vendors. If his view were correct, then analyst relations managers would be in the dock, not Gartner.

This can be seen two ways, after all the SEC/SOX and all those auditers-revenue-generation schemes are meant to regulate both financial analysts AND companies listed on stock markets.
